I am lucky. My love for beer developed at the perfect time. I was starting a new career that involved travel to California and Europe where I —literally— got a taste of the worldwide craft beer explosion through citrusy, bitter American beers and bubblegummy, dry Belgian ales. I began home brewing in 2009, frustrated by Newfoundland’s craft beer inadequacy. My interests have changed over the years, shifting from experimenta,l high alcohol, crazy malt and hop-bombs, to a focus on tweaking techniques and recipes. My goal: make better beer.
Having lived for several years in Houston, Texas with an inspirational home-brewer-turned-pro-brewer (go Sigma!) I was regularly provided with a guided tour of some of the best beers in the country. Returning to Newfoundland in 2012, I was confronted with the harsh reality that the variety of quality craft beers in the province was not up to snuff. I began homebrewing not long after in an attempt to clone my favourite beers and share them with friends and family.
After learning to love good beer during a trip to Colorado, I began to brew in the summer of 2013. Since then I've read and learned everything about the process of brewing that I can get my hands on. While my focus is generally on establishing solid core recipes for classic styles I also enjoy trying to come up with less conventional ingredient combinations in the hopes of discovering something new.
In November 2016 I became only the second Certified Cicerone® from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Locally in the St. John's, NL area I am available for hosting beer tastings and am also available for consultations on beer menu selection and food pairing. I am also available for freelance writing opportunities.
